The COVID-19 self-isolation finally gave me an opportunity to read Anna Karenina, which has been sitting unread on my shelf for probably close to a decade. I am glad that I finally got a chance to read it. I enjoyed the story but felt it was probably a couple of hundred pages too long.
19th century Russia. Anna is in a loveless marriage and enters into an affair. There is a lot of discussion of politics and philosophizing. If the story had been a bit more focused I probably would have enjoyed it ...more

Well, I certainly feel like it was an accomplishment to finish this huge beast of a book! I listened to this as an audiobook and man oh man it took awhile to get through this giant tome. I understand why Anna Karenina is a classic, beloved and incredibly respected epic, I do. That being said, for one who has no stomach for long descriptions, exhausting self-meditations or philosophical conversations it's very tiresome. And seriously, by the end there, Anna was insufferable. Sigh... I need a light read now!

I disliked this book immensely. I just don't do Russian authors, I guess. It was depressing, it was full of sin and consequences of sin, I hated the ending...blah! Granted, I read this book in high school...I might feel differently about it as an adult...if I could bring myself to pick it up again!

Russian soap opera at its finest. Maudlin, sentimental, treacly, and absolutely wonderful.
