So far I'm reminded both of Jane Austen, because of Tolstoy's eye for telling detail and sly critique of the cruelties and pettiness of 'society', and of Madame Bovary, another tragic woman whose mistake was to desire love.

To quote Liz Lemon on the seminal comedy 30 Rock, "blergh". I found this novel dragged considerably towards the end and I experienced difficulty in finishing it at all; and considered giving up on it.
In the debate regarding the greatest novel of all time, I would definitely cast my vote in the direction of Flaubert's Madame Bovary over this work.

I disliked this book immensely. I just don't do Russian authors, I guess. It was depressing, it was full of sin and consequences of sin, I hated the ending...blah! Granted, I read this book in high school...I might feel differently about it as an adult...if I could bring myself to pick it up again!
