What an enjoyable read, kind of hitchhiker-y a bit expanse-y and a bit firefly-y but all around a blast
Rosemary Harper is on the run from her past and herself, she hopes to get lost out in the open of space. To do so she signs on to be the records clerk for a Tunneling ship- the Wayfarer. Another book I chose because of a number of Cannonball Read recommendations. This novel reminded me of some of the science fiction novels I loved as a young teen (most whose titles and authors have faded into the morass of my middle-aged brain) and quite a bit of Firefly. Chambers did a great job of world-building but not getting bogged down in exposition and I found myself intrigued by all the members of this ship and not just our heroine, Rosemary Harper. This was great - wonderful characters and the way their backstories was woven in was very natural. This did feel a little like another book where the last bit was a little compressed compared to the rest of the novel, but at the same time that compression was very plot-driven, so it didn’t feel as unsatisfying as the last book where I encountered this. Anyway, highly recommend for any scifi fans, especially if you’re into scrappy, mismatched crews a la Firefly.
