4.5 starts. Fun, but thought provoking story about what it means to be a family

I loved the beginning of this book. In just a few chapters, characters were introduced without elaborate world building.

I loved the conclusion of this book. In big and little ways, we could see how the members of The Wayfarer were more family than co-workers.

Another book I chose because of a number of Cannonball Read recommendations. This novel reminded me of some of the science fiction novels I loved as a young teen (most whose titles and authors have faded into the morass of my middle-aged brain) and quite a bit of Firefly. This was great - wonderful characters and the way their backstories was woven in was very natural. This did feel a little like another book where the last bit was a little compressed compared to the rest of the novel, but at the same time that compression was very plot-driven, so it didn’t feel as unsatisfying as the last book where I encountered this. Anyway, highly recommend for any scifi fans, especially if you’re into scrappy, mismatched crews a la Firefly.
