I picked up Reading Lolita in Tehran because I seemed to be hearing about it from every direction. I knew it was about, well, reading Lolita in Tehran, but that was about it. It turned out to be a chronicle of living in Iran during the turbulent and politically charged latter twentieth century, of being a woman and an academic in a climate that favored neither, and of loving books so passionately that the stories color one's memory of the past.

An intense memoir that combined a historical/cultural history of Iran with love of fiction. It was definitely heavy at times but the author successfully painted a picture of what it was like to live in Iran throughout the pre and post revolution years. She made me want to read books deeply and to take a literature class! Shortly after I read this, Azar Nafisi spoke at Colorado College... she's an amazing woman.

I was really looking forward to this one, but I couldn't get into it. I might try it again later, but it really felt like reading a book review, and it wasn't as engaging as I expected. Maybe it just takes a while to get going, but I didn't have the patience to give it more than fifty pages or so :-(

I gave this book to page 100. I wanted to like it, but it just wasn't compelling and had too much discussion of literature without tying in the current situation in Iran enough.
