Excellent book about the terror of being a child as war breaks out. This book gives you an insider view of the breakup of Yugoslavia, as well as how closely intertwined the various cultures were. The pacing was great, the situations presented were harrowingly realistic, and I was very angry whenever life interfered with finishing this book.
Girl at War by Sara Novic is an intense story about the lasting impact of the break-up of Yugoslavia on a Croatian girl and her family. In 1991, Ana is 10 years old and living in Zagreb (Croatia’s largest city) with her parents and younger sister. At first, the civil war seems far away and surfaces only in small ways; but becomes personal and deadly when hostile borders separate Ana’s family from medical care. This is the story of Ana, a 10 year old girl living in Zagreb, Croatia when the Yugoslavian civil wars begin. She lives in an apartment with her parents and baby sister, and we get a good picture of what life was like under threat of air raids and rebel attacks, and how kids could still be kids.
