Listened to this one on audio.

Really strong memoir. There are parts of the story when I would feel slightly lost or confused or wonder why Ta-Nehisi Coates was saying certain stories. But then I reminded myself that this book wasn't necessary FOR me, this isn't meant to be an entertaining story, and it was important for me to really listen to the ideas and stories being told and realize that the point is more to see the world through his eyes, which is a POV that I'll never truly experience mys

I felt the anger in the author this time and he has a right to be angry.





I read the first half of this book and listened to the second half. I believe it is an important book for U.S. citizens to read. I read this immediately after finishing "Americanah" which is a Nigerian woman's experience of being "black" in America. The books resonate with each other.

coates' visceral, atheistic thesis - his insistence that the body is indistinguishable and inseparable from the spirit - connected with me in a really profound way. despite my inherent privilege, it spoke to a lot of the feelings i have being a woman in western society. i can't recommend this highly enough. ...more
