Read. This. Book.
It is a rare moment in one's life that you get to read a book that changes you. It's a feeling that, once experienced, you long to experience again. I'm a bit breathless with that feeling right now.
There is little that I can say about Mr. Coates' book that has not been said far more eloquently by far more distinguished individuals than me. The cover of the edition I purchased has a quote from Toni Morrison that says simply, "This is required reading." This is a book that should ...more

A powerful, beautifully written, look at America as experienced by African Americans.
A somewhat difficult though very thought provoking read. I don't agree with everything the author has to say but I thought it very powerful and eloquent statement nonetheless.
