I had heard amazing things about this book, but was not convinced going in that I would love it. Boy, was I wrong. It's very easy for a novel following multiple generations of a family to get bogged down in too many characters, or even to be boring, but this book avoids those traps masterfully. The writing is simple but eloquent, and I really grew to care about many of these characters. No one was perfect; everyone seemed beautifully flawed and human.
