American Street is a disarming look at the life of a young Haitian immigrant whose mother is sent to a detention center while she’s sent on to her aunt and cousins in Detroit. Fabiola’s new world is disorienting and confusing and she makes some poor choices in her quest to find her way.

I loved the mix of Haitian magical beliefs and modern day Detroit. I cringed at the realism of one white girl’s death meaning more than those of the (black) drug dealers. I was touched by the insight into this ch

This is one of the books that I really loved (5 Stars) but didn’t get a chance to review right away. I read it while in China (which made for sort of a weird cultural fusion—an American in Xi’an reads a story about a Haitian immigrant girl coming to Detroit—culture shock all around). Fabiola Toussant is traveling from Haiti with her mother to stay with her cousins in Detroit.
