I haven't read this since high school. I probably didn't understand it then, yet I would say that a powerful discussion could happen with today's high school students in looking at the underlying essence of the story. Do all men who've lost a girl to a rich guy think that if they just make enough money (by whatever means) she'll come back to them? Do we hold on to our dreams too long or do we know how to judge whether or not a dream is realistic?

Despite the fact that this took me almost 2 months to read, I really enjoyed it. There are a lot of similarities to the excess of the 1920s to what happened in the late 1990s, early 2000s with a lot of people living "high off the hog". The story was a little dull at times and there were a few times in which I had to back track and reread what I had read in order to so that I wouldn't miss anything. I read this book many years ago and remember enjoying it, though I couldn't tell you about it now!
