I loved this book. It's an enthralling story about a small community in Germany during WWII and the power of books to soothe the soul. I think I am probably the last person on the planet to read this. I'm going to watch the movie and it'll fit my book that's been made into a movie for the Read Harder Challenge. ...more

I never re-read books, but I know I will revisit this book--I love the characters and message so much. I read and listened to the masterful narration of Allan Corduner.

It's hard to say why this book is so wonderful. I'd like to be more like Hans Hubermann. And Liesel too. This book made me cry, and cry out, more than once. It's just so beautiful and sad. ...more

Every review is true. Break out the tissues for the last chapter, and do not read in public.

The book was incredibly descriptive, uniquely written and overall a book in which you wanted to emotionally invest. Everyone should read it!

Death narrates the story of a girl in Nazi Germany. She sees her brother die, her mother gives her up to foster parents and she must make her own way. Two men and a boy give her comfort; her Papa, a Jewish man they hide and a young boy. Reading and writing also hold her aloft.
