I loved this book. It's an enthralling story about a small community in Germany during WWII and the power of books to soothe the soul. I think I am probably the last person on the planet to read this. I'm going to watch the movie and it'll fit my book that's been made into a movie for the Read Harder Challenge. ...more

***MY GENERAL RULE FOR FICTION***
I stay away from WWII fiction.
It was awful enough with fictionalizing it.

Of course it is impossible to stay completely away from WWII stories. I allowed myslef the exception with The Book Thief.

It's good for YA fiction. It's a charming story. You have to love a girl who reads. But it stops there. For adults it's a shallow read. It lacks any real substance. I would recommend it to my 14 year old neice, but no one any older.

can't give 5 stars. I was expecting a 5 star-er but it just was not for me. I loved the narration and the weirdness, the end is fantastic. ...more

Death narrates the story of a girl in Nazi Germany. She sees her brother die, her mother gives her up to foster parents and she must make her own way. Two men and a boy give her comfort; her Papa, a Jewish man they hide and a young boy. Reading and writing also hold her aloft.
