I had bought the book a number of years ago and I can't recall what the circumstances behind the purchase, but I suppose a large part of it was the reviews I had read on various blogs and that was probably a huge influence on my purchase. But nonetheless, this was a book that I had a hard time putting down, when I was in my reading mode (I sometimes lost a bit of focus and got a little antsy due to the length, but that isn't neither here nor there and not the point of this review). This one came as a parent gift in this year's book fair. It's one I've intended to read for a long time, and I'm a little embarrassed it took me so long to finally read it!

I was sold on this book as soon as I realized who the narrator was, very inventive. And his view on the Holocaust from up above in the context of his vast experience was very moving. I enjoyed slowly finding out why the main character was called the Book Thief.

I cannot believe that this is a young adult book! It was so well written and not at all a "typical" Holocaust book. I absolutely loved the characters and could not put it down. ...more
