Keigo Higashino is a known and very popular mystery writer in Japan. When I get to this task this year Popsugar reading challenge: Read a best seller from 1990, I decided to look outside of US or UK world and this book came up, published originally in 1996 in Japan but translated to English in the 2000s.
It was a very well-written mystery story with having Japanese culture in the core, so like much Japanese literature at least for it looked slow but at the end I really enjoyed it.

This twisty mystery from Japanese author Higashino is the 4th in a series but can be read as a standalone. Bestselling author Kunihiko Hidaka has been found dead in his office. The office is locked, the house is locked, and most of their belongings have already been moved to their new home in Canada. So who could have done it, and why? Three people were the last two see him: his wife Rie; a woman who is suing Hidaka over the contents of one of his books; and his best friend, Osamu Nonoguchi.

This is such an odd murder mystery! Within the first 20% of the book, a man is murdered, the police investigate, find a suspect, and the suspect confesses. What, then is the rest of the book??? The motive. What really happened. No, really THIS time it's the truth. No, wait, THIS time is the truth. Or is it? Better keep reading.

Interesting way to unfold the story. Other than the names, the setting doesn't feel particularly Japanese in this one. It seems like something that would easily get made into a movie set in another country.
