I think I enjoyed this book more than the second in the series, but still not as much as the first. What I loved about this book was Fforde's creation of the bookworld where Thursday has chosen to rest and hide from those in the real world who wish to arrest or kidnap her for various nefarious reasons. Fforde has quite an imagination, and he uses it well to recreate many of fiction's best-loved and not-so-loved characters. Some of my favorite moments: an anger management session with the charact ...more

The narrative itself: one of my favorite Fforde's.

The audio narrator for this version: Emily Gray is pretty bland. The Eliabeth Sastre narration for the CD set is much more dynamic and fun.

Maybe 3.5. This one felt more discombobulated than the previous two, though that's maybe not saying a lot. Fforde has a thing for subplots, side plots, round-the-way plots, and random dead ends thrown in for laughs. That said, it's full of the lexicomedy and absurdist imagination that makes me keep coming back to these books. They aren't great literature, but they are fun and funny and escapist and clever. Worse things to be in this world. ...more

This one is probably my favorite Thursday book because it takes place almost entirely in the book world!

It's never a good sign when it takes me months to finish a book and this book has taken many months. I loved The Eyre Affair and really enjoyed Lost in a Good Book. This third entry in the Thursday Next series got a bit tedious. Perhaps it is because I didn't follow the references to all of the books which came up -- maybe that's why I was so confused. I might read the next book in the series, but it will be a while. ...more

The Thursday Next mysteries are not high on character development, nor do they have complex plots, but the author has put a great deal of imagination into the creation of a world inside of books. The stories are fun and entertaining.
