Man this is impossible to review. I feel like it's a book you're either going to like or not, and possibly strongly so. It's sprawling, like America itself, and big and deep and complex and intense and also simple and true-feeling and captivating. Not a lot happens in some parts and everything in the world happens in others. I found myself yelling at the recording, "NO! NOOO!" or laughing or crying in the parking lot just to listen to one last bit. It's twisty and turny and predictable and shock

This book has languished on my TBR list for years because I don't really care for mythology stories, in general. So imagine my surprise when I got sucked into the story of Shadow and the Gods right away. I did have to google gods from time to time to make sure I was understanding what was going on, but for the most part it wasn't too hard to follow. It probably helped that I listened to the 10th anniversary version of the audiobook, which is very well done.

It took me FOREVER to finish this book. Many starts and stops, and finally I purchased the full cast audiobook version so I could listen all the way through it. The book really picks up at the end, and everything becomes so much clearer. It is worth it for you own peace of mind to finish it once you start - you won't be disappointed.

This is a confounding book.
This time I listened to this book rather than read.
So much of it was good, yet I am still stumped about it.
I am not a big fantasy reader, so that may be the limiting factor.
I am glad I have re-read it.
Some of the characters are great. Sometimes I felt that the book was going nowhere.

Well-crafted and packed with the stuff that makes English majors and myth/legend lovers squee. I love the use of quite traditional myth tropes in modern day...and his departures from the traditional. And I get the feeling there will be more layers to peel back and explore on the second (and third!) read :-)

I just couldn't finish. It took a lot of groaning for me to abandon a book after 429 pgs. However, life is short and there are too many other (more intriguing) books to read. The last 140 pgs weren't worth it.
