What Members Thought

This is a great sci-fi novella. It has everything I love: a coming of age story, a rebellious teen, interstellar travel, and war/misunderstanding between peoples. Add to that some Afrofuturism via a black female main character (hallelujah!) and Namibia in the far-flung future. This reminded me of the Lilith series by Octavia Butler. I will be reading the second in the series tomorrow!

This one is tough to review for me. Both because it's a novella and because it's YA. So while at times the narrative felt ... trite? And some conflict seemed too easily resolved, I also acknowledge that the format and the audience sort of necessitate that. So if I look past those issues, Binti had all the aspects that I love about science fiction. It explores race and colonialism and coming of age. I'll definitely read the rest of the series, but have a feeling I'm going to wish it was packaged

Waaaayyy too short. I wanted so much more. This is obviously going to be a long series. I barely got a taste of the worlds involved. It felt a little like a prologue. The visual descriptions are beautiful. I can't wait for this to be a movie.
