That was definitely a mind blowing read. The book's world is constructed so carefully, confusing at the beginning but very satisfying at the end.

One of few books that the ending is not disappointing. Can't wait to read the sequel!

Ummmm yeah. Innovative magic, poly pirates, weird obelisks filled with power, a fully realized and totally strange world. I know why people love these books now.

A rich science-fiction/fantasy (maybe just sci-fi? not sure) story set in a world where people with powers are feared and outcast but necessary to maintain human life. 4.5 stars, really. EVEN THOUGH it left me with more questions than answers, and is going to force me to read the rest of the series, which is something I HATE (I need my books to be able to stand alone, even if they are part of a series!). But I really need to understand/see through so many things. Nice work, Jemisin.

The things that I enjoyed are the descriptions of the inhabitants of Stillness. They aren't described in the racial terms that we know, but it's clear the inhabitants of Stillness include people of color. In so many fantasy/dystopian novels the default is "whiteness." I also enjoyed the descriptions of how orogene ...more

Truthfully, I waited until I'd read the whole series to write this review because while The Fifth Season is gorgeous on it's own, you really do need to read the full trilogy to appreciate each book. The world-building Jemisin does is just astounding. And though there are what feels like a million characters going in a million different directions, the way they weave together yet have such distinct voices keeps you from getting too turned around. Highly HIGHLY recommend this. ...more
