I cried when I realized that I was on the last page of this book. Not because it was sad, although it's a solemn book, but because it ended.

Solnit blurs the line here between natural history and memoir. Both are perfect, made more perfect in combination.

I picked up the Kobo version of this book because last year, I came across this quote from it in an online class, and I actually typed up the quote and carried it around with me for quite a while: "the things we want are transformative, and we do not know, or only think we know, what is on the other side of that transformation".

Although I do like the short stories and astute observations of Solnit, a whole book of her short stories was too much description (nor enough action/variation) for my taste.
