I read this book in college and loved it (as much as an 18-year-old reading for a class can love an assigned book), but I just listened to the audiobook read by Dylan Baker and fell more in love with it -- partly my age, partly the times we live in, and mostly because Dylan Baker's reading was so powerful. A few times I had to sit in my car and cry and collect myself. Listening to it felt like a gift. Highly recommended.

*OK, I wrote that like, 20 pages into the book. Yes, I didn't mean it in a bad way--it's just really depressing. But still awesome. I will say that I understand why I could never get through it before now. It's not a book I would have appreciated nearly as much when I was younger and hadn't been working in the "real world" for awhile.

A book you were supposed to read in school, but didn't: The Grapes of Wrath, John Steinbeck (sort of cheating on this one- I was an overly diligent child who read all her assigned books, but it's a book people read in school that I've never read)
