Fun in the beginning, meh in the middle, fantastic in the last 100 pages or so. Would absolutely read a sequel.

A lot of reviewers have compared this to Jane Austen, and rightly so. The gently sarcastic humor and the dialogue would be right at home on a shelf next to Pride and Prejudice. And Prunella could easily be a Bennet sister... although she often reminded me more of Lydia than Eliza.

Medium light wizardry; enjoyable if you thought Jonathan strange and mr norrell was too long and kind of a downer.

Great world-building and I definitely appreciated the diversity of the characters, but I missed the tongue-in-cheek humor that I've come to expect through other books in the genre ( The Lies of Locke Lamora (Gentleman Bastard, #1) by Scott Lynch , A Darker Shade of Magic (Shades of Magic, #1) by V.E. Schwab ). ...more

I don't know if it was the reading slump I've found myself in for most of the beginning of this year or the writing style, or some combination of both. I did really enjoy most of the characters throughout, and enjoyed the last 150ish pages. ...more

Got a couple chapters in and was struggling with the language. It’s formal to the point of feeling stilted.
