I actually think I was generous in giving two stars. There was not
much science involved and the author seemed more interested in
proving there is no afterlife. Proof of any kind was lacking.

This book starts with Mary traveling to India to explore reincarnation and ends with attempts to prove the existence of near-death, out-of-body experiences. In between, she tries to find out if science can prove the existence of a soul, goes to medium school, and tries to hear (and capture) EVP voice recordings. I really wanted to like this book much more than I did. I enjoyed Roach's first book, Stiff , and find her style of writing both witty and informative. However, I struggled most of the way through this book. The subject was interesting, but I didn't find it as compelling as I had hoped. The chapters in which Roach went on various excursions to do her own research saved the book for me -- if only the whole book could have been written that way. ...more

A look at the background and current state of the science of reincarnation, mediums, ectoplasms, souls, hauntings, near-death experiences, etc.

Some of it was really intersting, some of it wasn't, but I think I was disappointed because I expected to love it.

I have high hopes for her other books, though.
