The characters are well-written; their vanity, selfishness, blind faith and cruelty is vividly described and reminds me all too much of humanity. Orwell has successfully written a satirical novel on Russian Communism, while at the same time sketching a children's story about discontented animals on a farm. You could read Animal Farm without understanding the satirical part, but why would you? I recommend reading up a little on Russian Communist history, or at least have a quick skim of the respe

A satire in fable form on revolutions and government systems. The animals of a farm revolt against their human masters and drive them out, the pigs becoming the leaders. The pigs are corrupted by power and a new tyranny replaces the old.
