This dystopian vision hits a little too close to home. It was disturbing to read right now, though beautifully and perhaps even prophetically imagined. I wasn't as taken with the mystical "Earthseed" element, but it may be setting the stage for a more science fictional turn in the next book.

It's eerie to read books written a while ago that are set in the future, when you are almost in that future the author predicted. This novel was written in 1993 about a girl who lives in the outskirts of Los Angeles in the year 2024. The thing that struck me is that I had never read a post-apocalyptic book that involved the formation of a religion, but in reading Parable of the Sower, it made so much sense! This book has a slow burn. For much of it, I debated setting it aside. Only my regard for Octavia Butler's other books and reputation kept me going. In the end, I am glad I stuck with it. It is a meditation on faith, humanity, and the line between morality and survival.

07/2008: This book seems pretty good, but for some reason I just cannot get into it right now -- I think that has more to do with me than with the book itself. The library wants it back soon, too, so I think I'll just have to read it another time.
