I thought this book started off a little slow but hit its stride about a third of the way through. It was an interesting story, not quite what I was expecting in a sci-fi novel. The ebook I borrowed had both books together, so i will read the next book to find out what happens now.

I just read this interesting article which argues this book is the one we should be reading (instead of 1984) given the current political climate. I'm definitely intrigued, since this book, published in 1995, also seems to be YA dystopian fiction before that was such a popular genre.

It is certainly strange to read a sci-fi book published 30 years ago set to our present day. When people were suggesting which sci-fi novel we are in, most referenced this book. That seems to be an accurate statement. Since I am reading this from the "future" I can confirm her predictions. We have had a President who deludes people into thinking that good times will return. Set as civilization is falling to pieces (for reasons that are never clearly explained), this is the story of a young woman who builds a community around herself as she looks for a better place to build a life.
