By all rights, I should have loved this book. It's centered around a man who is a gifted engineer and a woman who has magical powers. It's a mashup of science-fiction and fantasy, which felt like a dream come true. I didn't love it, but it was well done. My problem with the book was that the characters felt flat, and I felt no interest in the friendship or romance of the two protaginists. However, the book does create one character I adored, which is a program that expands and learns on its own, ...more

3-1/2 stars. wow - this book was a crazy ride... entertaining and smart and - despite the impending global destruction - fun! there are some smart lessons here for today's world, too. I loved Patricia and Laurence, especially as a couple. and of course, the magic. ...more

I get the feeling that this one will stick with me. Like, I'll return to this for a re-read years and years from now.

Interesting story of the tension between science and magic ( or nature and technology). There were plenty of interesting thoughts and points of view. Overall it was a good book, but I had a couple of big problems. First, with the ridiculously horrible adults in the first part of the book. The bullying and neglect was so bad it was almost cartoonish. Add in the heaps of coincidences, and the book loses some of its glow.

A very interesting premise that got too wrapped up in gigantic plot turns and petered out its intriguing characters by the ending. Three and a half stars, rounding down to three.

Weird and quirky and fun. Some inconsistencies and odd jumping around in time, but overall I enjoyed the story.
