By all rights, I should have loved this book. It's centered around a man who is a gifted engineer and a woman who has magical powers. It's a mashup of science-fiction and fantasy, which felt like a dream come true. I didn't love it, but it was well done. My problem with the book was that the characters felt flat, and I felt no interest in the friendship or romance of the two protaginists. However, the book does create one character I adored, which is a program that expands and learns on its own,

3-1/2 stars. wow - this book was a crazy ride... entertaining and smart and - despite the impending global destruction - fun! there are some smart lessons here for today's world, too. I loved Patricia and Laurence, especially as a couple. and of course, the magic.

I get the feeling that this one will stick with me. Like, I'll return to this for a re-read years and years from now.
There's something about this book which starts like a fable or a fairytale. It has that simplicity and clarity of view which children have and which the main characters are.
And then like life and like Peregrine, the storytelling evolves and grows and gets more complicated and nuanced. The story grows to contain impossible contradictions which can destroy or be reconciled.

Interesting story of the tension between science and magic ( or nature and technology). There were plenty of interesting thoughts and points of view. Overall it was a good book, but I had a couple of big problems. First, with the ridiculously horrible adults in the first part of the book. The bullying and neglect was so bad it was almost cartoonish. Add in the heaps of coincidences, and the book loses some of its glow.

Weird and quirky and fun. Some inconsistencies and odd jumping around in time, but overall I enjoyed the story.
