By all rights, I should have loved this book. It's centered around a man who is a gifted engineer and a woman who has magical powers. It's a mashup of science-fiction and fantasy, which felt like a dream come true. I didn't love it, but it was well done. My problem with the book was that the characters felt flat, and I felt no interest in the friendship or romance of the two protaginists. This could be a series although I'm not sure how they could it. Charlie introduces two different communities as if they were just fact, with a quiet acceptance of the different abilities of the heroes. I want to know more about the witches, more about the scientists, more about the world past.
