For the first third of this book, I was very much ¯\_(ツ)_/¯ I couldn't get into it at all. Little by little, I became engrossed - if still not entirely convinced. And then, suddenly, I was a sniffling mess who just gave it a five star rating. I'm contrary like that. The slow beginning, which didn't quite sit right with me personally (perhaps just a taste thing), is necessary for the wonderful whole I guess. I ended up liking this a lot.

Charlie Jane Anders doesn't know me from a hole in the wall, but her descriptions of the awful feelings middle school induces are like she was in my head, though in a more Dahlian environment. I wanted to be Patricia in eighth grade, basically, though thankfully the longest my parents ever grounded me was a week, but I still hoped I'd wake up with magic powers I could use to escape my awful classmates. I loved the magitechnical realism, the casual world building reminders of the haves/have nots
