I needed a literary palette cleanser after the dark, disturbing book I read previously. This book was pleasant in the way watching a Masterpiece series can be, but the ending was not satisfying to me. Without giving anything anyway, I wanted (the dust jacket alluded to) Cora growing up into a woman of substance. I'm trying to have some historical relativism here, but she didn't grow to have the depth I wanted her to.

This helped me get a grip on my Downton Abbey cravings, though it could have been so much more. Goodwin offered a parallel story to the heiress Cora Cash: her maid, Mabel. I don't know why it took me so long to finish this book because I really liked it. The characters are interesting and complicated. So is not clear perfect hero or villain. This was a nice addition to the more stereotypical romances I've been reading lately.

I guess I'm a sucker for visions of big dresses and British royalty. This book had all these things and some decent writing. Then it fell flat on it's corseted ass.
