I needed a literary palette cleanser after the dark, disturbing book I read previously. This book was pleasant in the way watching a Masterpiece series can be, but the ending was not satisfying to me. Without giving anything anyway, I wanted (the dust jacket alluded to) Cora growing up into a woman of substance. I'm trying to have some historical relativism here, but she didn't grow to have the depth I wanted her to. ...more

This helped me get a grip on my Downton Abbey cravings, though it could have been so much more. Goodwin offered a parallel story to the heiress Cora Cash: her maid, Mabel. But this story never seemed as full as Cora's and almost seemed obligatory. The contrast could have been much more striking, I think. Also, Goodwin borrowed heavily from the life of Consuelo Vanderbilt, a real-life heiress, which would have been nice to know. Perhaps it could have been framed as an imaginary biography? ...more

I picked this up due to the beautiful cover, the setting (1890s New York and England), and the premise (American heiress goes to England to find a titled husband) and it was pretty entertaining but a lot less Serious Literature and a lot more Victoria Holt-ish than I expected!

I don't know why it took me so long to finish this book because I really liked it. The characters are interesting and complicated. So is not clear perfect hero or villain. This was a nice addition to the more stereotypical romances I've been reading lately. ...more
