What Members Thought

Once upon a time, before chimaera and seraphim, there was the sun and the moons. The sun was betrothed to Nitid, the bright sister [moon], but it was demure Ellai, always hiding behind her bold sister, who stirred his lust. He contrived to come upon her bathing in the sea, and he took her. She struggled, but he was the sun, and he thought he should have what he wanted. Ellai stabbed him and escaped, and the blood of the sun flew like sparks to earth, where it became seraphim - misbegotten chi

3.5 stars. The world created by Laini Taylor is wonderful to read. Karin is a teenaged art student in Prague, an old soul who has a mysterious secret life outside of school, her friends and her charismatic con-artist ex-boyfriend. She was an orphan, raised by hybrid chimera in a magical house that is not quite in Prague itself, but some extra dimension. The chimera themselves have a secret life, beyond the door through which Karou is never allowed to enter (or exit, depending on how you look at

I really loved this one, so much that I am kind of angry it's over. Great world building, beautiful characters and a plot that felt new and original. Beautifully written and heartbreaking at the same time. Highly recommended.

This is actually a reread of at least a portion of this book. I started when it was first released on recommendations from a bunch of friends, and when I found myself a bit bogged down (namely in the sections where (view spoiler) ) I just gave up.

I realize it may be hard to classify a book this early in the game. I'm only halfway through, but it's taken me two days to read 200 pages and already I must admit, I love this book! The writing is so detailed and beautiful and the characters are fascinating. Highly recommended for fans of Clive Barker, Jonathan Carroll, and Gabrielle Zevin.

So I wanted to like this more. I will 100% continue with the series. Laini Taylor is a hell of a writer and the world building was supreme. Where I had issue was with relying too heavily on romance to tell the story. I understand why, but the time and detail spent on it was just not my personal taste. I actually look forward to see where the second book goes.
This book is hard to talk about without spoilers.

One of the better YA paranormal books I've read recently. Nice to see something other than vampires and werewolves for once.
