I often worry that these books with a lot of buzz won’t live up to the hype by the time I get around to reading them. In this case, I shouldn’t have worried. From his prime-numbered chapters to his reasons why he doesn’t like the colors yellow and brown, Haddon’s autistic narrator is full of his own charm, even if he couldn’t tell you what charm was. This was a really touching, quick read about a young man who has autism. The man decides to investigate the murder of a local dog and in doing so uncovers much more than he bargained for.
I thought the author did a fantastic job of communicating the struggle to communicate with the world that many autistic people face. I thought I was going to hate this, and I kept waiting to hate it, but I liked it after all. It isn't going down in my list of favorites but I enjoyed it. And I think I am a little autistic because most of the things he thought didn't seem all that unusual to me.
