Dammit.

I thought third time would be the charm.

After having read two other novels by Ms. Spark (as well as a small memoir by one of her friends) and having found them all pretty dreadful, I thought that for sure this one would redeem her for me.

There are many writers who have "off" books, but I think I've now thoroughly given it the old college try.

There were moments of cleverness - thereby the two stars rather than only one star - but by style alone this could not be redeemed. And those charact

I liked this book a lot. I think it was written beautifully, and I love the way she lets everything become clear and how things become important. Also it's about Scotland and I'm so used to reading about England, so that was refreshing. ...more

I have now abandoned this book three times, so I’m finally making a note of it here so I don’t pick it up at another thrift store. I’ve read so many good reviews on this book, that I keep thinking it’s on I absolutely must read, but it is apparently not my cup of tea.

There are too many repetitive words and phrases, and I don’t like how the flashbacks happen mid-paragraph. While I think the story is one I would like, I can’t bear the writing style any longer.
