When I was a kid, one of my favorite books was called "The Boy, the Soldier, and the Sea" L'Enfant, le soldat et la mer by Georges Fonvilliers. It's a book about a boy who lives in France during World War II. His dad died in the war, so he thinks he can fight the German soldiers with his friends. Pax reminded me of this book a lot, although the storyline was different.

"Pax," which means peace in Latin. It's about a young fox named Pax whose family was killed. A boy named Peter saves him and take

If I'd read this as a kid *****SPOILER ALERT*****

I'd have been sobbing all the way through it. Animal struggles are real people. I liked the personification of Pax though. I felt like his personality coincided with his species. Great writing. Great characters. Loved it.

One of the best of the year so far (I know it hasn't been long!). It was a little hard for me to read. It reminded me a lot of The Incredible Journey. I think I empathized too much with both animal and human in the devastation that their separation caused. ...more

A Boy and His Fox

A twist upon the “boy and his dog” trope, Pax and his boy are separated by war, but will do anything to be reunited. But nature and war have other plans . . .

I loved this bittersweet coming of age (for both the boy and the fox). I can’t wait to read the next one.

Audio book with the girls.

I enjoyed this, though I felt there was too much time spent on Peter's recuperation, which became boring, and not enough on the difficult decision at the end. In that way, I felt that the ending was a bit too pat and predictable, even if it was difficult. However, the audience for this book might feel this is the only really acceptable resolution. ...more

Freaking emotionally affecting animal stories. This is in the vein of Fred Gipson's Old Yeller (but slightly less traumatizing) and Ann M. Martin's Rain Reign. ...more

Wow. This was so interesting— Pinky was captivated and she pulls back from stories she doesn’t know right now.

Lovely tale of friendship and loyalty, survival, and the cost of war. Major sniffle warning.
