When I was a kid, one of my favorite books was called "The Boy, the Soldier, and the Sea" L'Enfant, le soldat et la mer by Georges Fonvilliers. It's a book about a boy who lives in France during World War II. His dad died in the war, so he thinks he can fight the German soldiers with his friends. Pax reminded me of this book a lot, although the storyline was different.

Freaking emotionally affecting animal stories. This is in the vein of Fred Gipson's Old Yeller (but slightly less traumatizing) and Ann M. Martin's Rain Reign.

Wow. This was so interesting— Pinky was captivated and she pulls back from stories she doesn’t know right now.
