Bingo - about a subject that challenges me. yeah, more war. contemporary war. war that happened during my lifetime. I haven't read much about the Vietnam War (because challenging subject :-) but this book seems to sum up everything I thought it was...and is. the war was still "current history" when I was in college; we didn't have the personal stories and 40 years of retrospection then. I honestly think this is close to a perfect book. O'Brien is a master craftsman, and his reflections on storytelling and truth are as insightful as his meditations on war.

This book is totally amazing. I feel like a lot of literary fiction is based around war stories, so I was resistant to reading this book for awhile as I am kind of burnt out on war. I also think a lot of the fiction about war fails to break new ground, or tell us about it in a new way. This book does that though.
