I think this is my third or forth reread and I feel like it handed my ass to me yet again. This time I read it in conversation with other books I read this month (The Castle Cross the Magnet Carter, Ballad of Black Tom, Long Division). I definitely did not understand the stuff about white topped social justice organizing on previous reads in the way I did this time through. Such a strange book! It reads more like a dream than a novel. I was planning to give it 2 stars but the ending convinced me to bump it up. I'm glad I read it, but the style was really confusing for me. I wish I'd read it in school so I could discuss it with someone. ...more
