More than 90 percent of this book takes place in the 1500s, and while I preferred the world built in A Discovery of Witches, this book really explores some of the central questions of the book and helps move Diana along in her development as a witch.
A few things that I found a bit problematic are time continuity/continuum and the fact that the very reason for going back to the 1500s was pretty significantly downplayed. That being said, I can't wait to get started on book 3! ...more

I've started and deleted my review six times already. I loved the second book in this series. Possibly as much or more than the first. However, it felt like it took a lot longer for this one to "hit its stride" and really reel me in. (It's possible that this is just perception, as I listened to a good bit of it in the audio version. What takes one hour to read takes three hours to listen to.)

The magic, I like. The history, I like. The main characters grew on me somewhat- I liked a number of supporting characters better- but the romance aspects were kind of annoying (we get it, vampires are possessive and controlling. Whatever). And the ending is a little abrupt and slightly confusing, unless it's partly that I'm not remember the end of book 1 clearly. But, it's not bad and I'll most likely read book 3, if for no other reason that the author gets the scholarship aspects really right

I actually liked this book even more than the first one in the series--maybe because if I were going to time travel, Elizabethean England is the place I would most like to visit. A fun, fast, and fulfilling read; can't wait for the final book!

I would have given this 4 stars but the length and speed of the book prevent me from doing so. I liked the book, but there are some issues with it.The book could've had 200 pages removed and it would've been just as strong. I haven't read the 3rd book yet, but some of the events seem arbitrary and hinder the overall pace of the story. I did enjoy it, but found that I couldn't sit and read it for long periods of time because it was crammed full of too many details that became redundant. TLDR: too

It's a fun read, but a bit slow. Would have added another half star if goodreads had that option, but couldn't give it a full additional star because some of my favourite stuff from the first book didn't carry over.
