This book was extremely fun to read. With just the right amount of history, science and things that go bump in the night. While I wasn't the biggest fan of Matthew's character development towards the end of the novel (imagine equal parts Jaime Fraser and Edward Cullen),it was probably historically accurate. The sequel to this book has just been published, and I read an article calling the series "TWILIGHT for adults". That's fairly accurate and in only the worst ways. Harkness is a very talented writer wasting her gifts on a vampire-fueled, sappy love story that is only one small step above Harlequin caliber (she turns her back on the aunts who raised her for a vampire she's known for two weeks? 3 1/2 stars is my gut reaction...that might change upon further contemplation. I liked this, but I didn't LOVE it (I was sort of expecting to at the beginning).
The novel tells the story (or at least the beginning of the story) of Diana Bishop, a non-practicing witch from an extremely powerful family (yes, those Bishops, from Salem). I went into this book with high expectations and came out underwhelmed for the amount of pages I read. This would be a good one to skim. That may sound harsh, but I think I would have thought it was great if I didn't give it such a thorough reading.
