Ideally I'd give this 3.5 stars but I'll round up because I'm definitely about to download book 2 and if I'm that into the story, then I might as well bump up the rating.
I feel like this book is what I wanted Twilight to be. I still think the hero (vampire) is too alpha male I-must-protect-my-woman for my liking, but the characters have depth, the world building is much more elaborate and the mystery involved is much more engaging. Lackluster, unlike vampires apparently...
This book is the equivalent of a long engagement with someone about whom one feels very lukewarm. It wasn't a bad book; it just wasn't great. The relationship development is not well-developed and slow-paced between protagonist Diana the reluctant witch (who has unreasonable emotional fits like a teenager throughout much of the book) and Matthew the vampire who appears out of nowhere and whose initial attractiveness isn't convincingly conveyed (he does gr ...more

Hard to put down, but makes a lot of questionable choices about gender roles.
First read 2012-2013. Reread 2017 so I could read 2 & 3.
