I saw this book in a used bookstore and realized I hadn't read it. And well, it was quite a book (as expected). It definitely could have used some editing (hence the knock off of half a star) but it was super fascinating and engaging and a what a character study. I had heard of all the controversy surrounding the book after it was released and I did a deep dive after I finished, but it doesn't alter the book for me. Next up: the 1970s series. I’m torn about this. The story itself is captivating, and Avery Brooks’ narration is outstanding. It’s beyond disgusting and sad what humans can do to one another.
This would easily be five stars without the whole plagiarism shit.

This book should be required reading for all of us. It presents the horrors of slavery in a terrifyingly heartbreaking way. You think you know something about slavery... then you read this book. It's a commitment well worth the time it takes to read. ...more
