I could have read this book in about 6 hours tops if it hadn't been for the inconvenience of having to go to work. As it was, I think it took me maybe about 10 or 12 hours from the time I cracked it until the time I finished it. I loved it. I tend to like post-apocalyptic sort of stories anyway, but this one especially grabbed my interest right from the start.

I thought I would die without the sequel right then and there when I first read this book. This is one of the very, very few books that gets a full five stars from me. Heartbreaking, chilling, gorgeous, fantastic world-building, addictive, and also one of the most fucking nerve-wracking and stressful books I’ve ever read in a completely fantastic way. Also, if you don’t tear up at all during this book, I’m almost positive you don’t have a soul. Just FYI.

I'm usually skeptical of both Young Adult and super-trendy books (never been interested in Twilight, for example) - but this book was phenomenal. I hated to have to put it down to go to sleep. It moves along so quickly, and sucks you in with both the fleshed out characters and the description of life in post-apocalyptic North America. Really moving, thought-provoking, you name it.

Review from 3/14/12:
Still really enjoyed this, and in fact read most of it in a matter of hours on the night I started it. This time around it reminded me less of The Long Walk, and it was also interesting to re-read this first book while knowing what would happen in the rest of the series. If you're at all curious about the film I really do recommend reading the book before you go. This is so fast paced that you'll whip right through it, even if you're not a fast reader (remember, it's a young ...more

Read it, had a pang of guilt at being a "spectator," got over it, and got swallowed up. It's not great literature, but it's a totally engrossing, quick read, the way the best YA literature is!

Excellent book. Every time a chapter ended I had to keeping going to find out what happened. Very unique concept. Some disturbing concepts that you can see happening in our society now. Definitely skewers the whole reality tv genre and why we like to watch other people suffer. I kept reminding myself it was a young adult book. There is a lot of violence if you are squeamish but not extreme or more than other books I've read.

Ok, ok, I get all the hype surrounding this book, but it really isn't that wow-worthy for me. The writing is a bit cringe-worthy at times and occasionally brought Twilight to mind. But the story's interesting enough, so I guess that kinda makes up for it.
