I'm usually skeptical of both Young Adult and super-trendy books (never been interested in Twilight, for example) - but this book was phenomenal. I hated to have to put it down to go to sleep. It moves along so quickly, and sucks you in with both the fleshed out characters and the description of life in post-apocalyptic North America. Really moving, thought-provoking, you name it.

Review from 3/14/12:
Still really enjoyed this, and in fact read most of it in a matter of hours on the night I started it. This time around it reminded me less of The Long Walk, and it was also interesting to re-read this first book while knowing what would happen in the rest of the series. If you're at all curious about the film I really do recommend reading the book before you go. This is so fast paced that you'll whip right through it, even if you're not a fast reader (remember, it's a young ...more

I started this book because I had to read it for my job. I finished it in one day, I don't know if more needs to be said.

I loved this book! I don't have very many teen heroes/heroines, but I do read a lot of YA/teen novels. I'm a big Harry Potter fan and have always been fond of Hermione Granger and finally I have been introduced to Katniss Everdeen! If only Katniss had been around when I was a teen (1990-1994) but I'm glad she's around now. Now...time for Catching Fire!

Excellent book. Every time a chapter ended I had to keeping going to find out what happened. Very unique concept. Some disturbing concepts that you can see happening in our society now. Definitely skewers the whole reality tv genre and why we like to watch other people suffer. I kept reminding myself it was a young adult book. There is a lot of violence if you are squeamish but not extreme or more than other books I've read.

Not since the Harry Potter series have I read a book that was so impossible to put down! I agree with Joy about the premise...when I heard it was about some sort of extreme reality tv show that was a fight to the death, I thought, give me a break! It was certainly captivating, though, and the romance in this book was much more my style compared to the sappiness of Twilight. I can't wait to see what happens in the next book!!

It has been a long time since I have actually lost sleep to finish a book. I literally could not put this book down. I found my self crying in at least 4 of the first 9 chapters and many more times after that. The characters even those we are only briefly acquainted with have such magnetism and of course katniss is such an incredible character. What a heart breaking and intense read. Now on to book two...

OK, thanks to Wendy for getting me into teen lit. So far, this is such a fun book, even though the premise of the plot is not at all fun. I love the characters so far; waiting to see how our heroine proceeds.... Ended up loving this story. I like that Collins writes about violence and war for teen readers.

Ok, ok, I get all the hype surrounding this book, but it really isn't that wow-worthy for me. The writing is a bit cringe-worthy at times and occasionally brought Twilight to mind. But the story's interesting enough, so I guess that kinda makes up for it.
