In a nutshell, the book is about the Behrani family who buys a house that is incorrectly placed for auction. The former owner, Kathy Nicolo has been wrongfully evicted. She tries to get her house back. In the process, she enlists the help of a police offier named Lester with whom she has sexual relations. Both of them harass the Behrani family.

I somehow managed to miss both the book and the movie until now, so I wasn't familiar with the story or the ending...but I could tell from about about page 5 that it wasn't going to end well. I thought about abandonding it midway through (I didn't think I was ready for a book without a happy ending) and then read the ending. I was surprised by the last five pages, so decided to stick with it to see how it got there. Whoa. crazy ride. And in the end, I'm glad I read it all. I loved the writing. T

This book made me uncomfortable and unhappy. I think it was supposed to do that, so well done Mr. Dubus, but I would rather read something a little more redeeming. Its like Lemony Snicket for grown-ups. Its not that I disliked it per say, it was just disturbing. Sort of like Boys Don't Cry and Leaving Los Vegas and Monster disturbing.

i have this thing where i must finish any book i start. it took me six months to read this book. i'm not kidding you. i wanted to quit reading this book more and more with every chapter i read. i finally got through it and wanted to gouge my eyes out once i did. it was tremendously depressing.
