A well-written, fair account of a dumb kid. I thought that by the end I'd feel either pity or derision for him, most likely derision -- but Krakauer made me feel more sympathy for him than I thought I would, and helped me to understand him. So, good on him.

first heard a report about this story on NPR. Not told chronologically, but to draw episodes from the young man's life to show different facets of his character, then also to compare him to others who have also tested themselves against the cold nature of the North (or of the desert or other lonely places, like the Irish monks who left Iceland because a few other people moved in and it got too crowded), and may or may not have survived.

This is my second Krakauer book this spring, but probably only picked this up because my teen book discussion group picked this unanimously, and that almost never happens. A short account of a young man who picks up and heads to Alaska where, months later he is dead. What would cause somebody to just walk away into the west, abandoning their family and previous life?
