What especially impressed me about this book is how, in the early chapters, I thought the protagonist was a total idiot, but Krakauer's research proves that actually Chris McCandless really knew what he was doing and was a great survivalist who had some really bad luck. Joe read it after I did and it brought up a lot of interesting discussions about responsibility to others and the significance of risktaking to certain types of people. I think I would have liked this a lot more if I had read it before I read Into Thin Air. However, if anyone else had written it besides Krakauer, I am sure it would have been terrible because the whole thing is so bizarre and McCandless is so unlikable.
