There are times I read books that leave me dumbfounded at what the author did with only the same words I have access to. This is one of those books. Moore clearly knows the gospels, history, and theology, but the story he tells is hysterical, irreverent, and shockingly lewd... and also profound and clearly respectful of Jesus himself. I have no idea how he did it.
I thought this was pretty good, and not nearly as sacrilegious as I thought it might be. When we meet Joshua (Jesus) at a young age he is already quite aware of who he is and who his father is, amusing his younger brother by bringing dead lizards back to life (his ability to reanimate is a recurring theme). Creative and crazy, as I have come to expect Moore's work to be. He always manages to take a subject that could be sensitive, like the early life of Jesus, and infuse great imagination and humor while respecting the topic. A great escape!
