This book had a very interesting concept. It introduces us to the main characters, Dexter and Emily, on a July day in the late 1980s as they are graduating from college. They become lifelong friends and the book checks in on them as they grow and develop over the next 20 or so years - always on this same July day.

The conceit of the novel definitely worked for me. The characterizations were well drawn out, despite only seeing them one day a year (and the author will be forgiven for having so man

This novel was witty, clever, smart, any other synonyms that go along with those words. I really enjoyed reading this book. I think the premise is also clever, each chapter being the same day of every year. I really felt I lived a lifetime with Dex and Em, Em and Dex. It was uber realistic as well, in my opinion. I really enjoyed this book. Even though the male protagonist was often quite unpleasant, I found the relationship between the two main characters interesting and funny and fun to read about, and I liked the concept of the book. I'm surprised, however, that it got such great reviews in major publications since despite its interesting structure and its little twist at the end, it really is just chick lit. Chick lit written by a man, so I suppose that makes a difference to some reviewers. ...more

Because Anne Hathaway will be in the movie version, and she is awesome.

Update: it's been nine years since I read this book and I had completely forgotten about it. The end made me just as mad the second time. Two stars.

I gave this book five stars for effective use of unique plot device, narrative stucture, and three-dimensional characters. Then I took away two stars because of the author's stupid, massive letdown of an ending. I would really recommend this book. Just stop reading before you get to the final fifty pages.

Enjoyable bit of fluff. Bonus points for being British and a few Edinburgh scenes.
