Dex and Em, Em and Dex. This is not your ordinary run of the mill chick-lit. It's funny and romantic, but also painful.
It all rang too true. If you've ever had a relationship like Em and Dex, Dex and Em, you may see too much of yourself in these pages for comfort. I certainly did. It's unusual for me to put a book down because it is too painful to read but I had to do that a few times with this book. On their last day of college, friends Emma and Dexter fall for each other and sleep together. But afterwards, life gets in the way and they part, but what happens with their relationship? Each chapter revisits the same day, July 15, over the course of decades, outlining what happens to Emma and Dexter.
I didn’t like this for a few reasons. While I appreciate the format of the book, it didn’t work for me. A lot can happen in a year, and as it’s mentioned in some of the chapters, a lot goes on that ...more

I really loved this book. I was wary that I wouldn't like it because of the device of hearing about one day a year, but I really actually enjoyed it. Had it not been written that way, I think I could have been annoyed by the characters when they were learning who they are (apparently I have no tolerance for people finding themselves…). The moments in this were really great, I felt like I got the full picture of their relationship. I also thought the characters were beautifully written—so full. I

I liked a lot of things about this book. In fact, if I could, I'd give it a 3.5. I like the ability to follow the characters through their lives, from their 20's to their 40's. I'm not sure the premise always worked, sometimes I think it would have been nice to have been "present" for some of the events that you hear about. Instead, it sometimes felt like reading an end of the year holiday letter, the author needed to catch you up on what had happened for the last year. Ultimately, though I neve

This book was not at all as advertised which actually is a good thing. I was expecting a simple riff on romantic relationships, but the book ended up being so much more. While the conceit is great what really resonated with me was how much I identified with Emma - her choice of (mediocre) relationships, how she viewed the world around her and how she chose to live life. A refreshing look on how the choices you make are not always solely your own.

This was a great book- I really loved it. A very interesting concept- it looks into the life of Dexter and Emma, friends from college in the '80s, on the same day every year. I didn't think I would like a book set up like that, but it really drew me in and I couldn't put it down. I kept wanting to read the next year's chaper to see what happened...I highly recommend this book!

Wow - after finishing this book, I think I need to read Sophie's Choice to cheer myself up. I really liked the book, but it was depressing! (Okay, maybe not as depressing as Sophie's Choice, but you get my point.)
