I grew up in a family where Lord of the Rings and
Ender's Game
featured in road trip discussions, discussing Messianic figures, ethics, blah blah blah. Obviously I was the only one who didn't read those books until adulthood so I would stare out the window and not participate in the passionate discussion. Maybe I read this at the wrong time in my life, but it was not my cup of tea. It was too long, the pacing was poor, and the dialouge was stilted. The only characters I had any affection for were Sam and the pony Bill. Everyone assures me the movies are better...dare I put myself thru hours of watching living this story again?

It's my favorite book hands down. It was extremely long however. You have to have a LOT of time to read it. And you have to be patient with the first part (Fellowship of the Ring) but it's completely worth the time and energy it takes to read it. I also recommend the movies highly. :)
