This is a call to action, blatantly opposing religious fundamentalism that oppresses women. Eltahawy (an Egyptian-American journalist) uses her own personal decisions about things like wearing a headscarf and preserving her virginity to force readers to look at her subjects as real women who have real rights; she won't let you treat it as an abstraction.

It's also highly readable, with the history of Egypt and Saudi Arabia and other countries, plus passages from the Koran, woven into Eltahawy's
